Junior East of England Cyclists
Morton House was delighted to once again host Junior East of England Cyclists for their training camp in February 2022. The group enjoyed riding the challenge of Yorkshire hills and Dales as they prepared for the season ahead.
Why is Masham is a great base for cycling?
10 / 15 mins off the A1(M) motorway, Masham is a small market town sitting on the fringes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Nidderdale, with the long and winding ascent – or descent – of Greenhow Hill, coupled with Lofthouse Bank means this long and narrow working dale is also blessed with some sprinting straights. You can choose the difficulty of your ride from the varying terrain and enjoy the Yorkshire hospitality along the way.
When you stay at Morton House and the Stable Block you can relax after a hard day’s riding … wash off the cycles in the rear courtyard and enjoy local food from our wonderful butchers and grocers. For self-catering the kitchen is fully equipped for even the most demanding chef and diner. Any season – we’re open so you can enjoy the great Yorkshire outdoors.

“I have used Morton House for our last 2 training camps. Its location in close proximity to the iconic Yorkshire climbs of Greenhow, Lofthouse, Buttertubs, Blubberhouses, Hawes and the quiet roads hereabouts provide an ideal environment for cycling – whether for training or recreation.
The house is ideal for large parties with the option of extending into the Stable Block. The kitchen is fully equipped for meeting the demanding nutritional requirements of hungry athletes burning several thousand calories per day. The rooms are comfortable and the house is kept clean and tidy. There is a good yard and hose for the essential cleaning of bikes, and a good laundry room for keeping kits clean”.
“Highly recommended for clubs, teams, parties for a fantastic cycling experience”.
I certainly hope to be back. I will also look into the viability of staying at your Tuscany villa. The logistics of getting there are a little more complex but I have always wanted to ride up the hills around Volterra since being inspired by the sight of a one-legged rider going up. This kept me going as I was grinding my way up Lofthouse last week.
I also have some video footage of the team in action on the roads. Shows off the countryside to good effect as it was shot in sunshine last Thursday pm. Once I have edited and cut it I will send you a clip.
Very best regards,
Marshall Crowe
